Spring/Summer Guest (Non-degree) Student Requirements

A guest (non-degree) student:

• Is required to pay tuition to the University of Michigan according to the tuition & fees schedule. For current tuition and fees, please visit the registrar's website.

• Is subject to all the admission and registration regulations of the University of Michigan.

• Does not have permission to register as a degree candidate at the University of Michigan.

• Is responsible for determining that the home institution will accept credit earned as a guest student.

• Must understand that falsification of any part of a Guest (Non-degree) Application may result in cancellation of admission and/or registration.

• Must arrange to have a transcript of any credit earned sent from the University of Michigan to the home institution.

Completing the Application

• All applicants must complete and submit this Non-degree Application form.

• Applicants who are currently enrolled in college must have Verification of Student Record completed by the Registrar (or the office at your school that processes guest applications).

• Applicants who have graduated from college must either provide an official copy of your final transcript showing that you have received a degree or have a Verification of Student Record completed by the college from which you graduated, certifying that you have received a degree.

• Applicants who were previously enrolled in college but have not completed an undergraduate bachelor's degree must provide the most current official copy of your transcript or have a Verification of Student Record certified by the most recently attended institution.

• Applicants who are graduating high school seniors are NOT eligible for spring guest (non-degree) status. Students who will not be enrolling at UM-Ann Arbor may apply for summer guest (non-degree) consideration. However, applicants who have been admitted and are planning to enroll at the University of Michigan for the fall 2027 term should contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to determine if changing your term of enrollment is possible.

• Applicants who are graduating high school seniors must provide a final, official transcript with graduation date and senior grades.

• Applicants who are F-1 or J-1 visa holders must submit an official transcript in addition to the Verification of Student Record. A completed Financial Resources Statement and supporting documentation are required as well. Students already in the U.S. on F-1 or J-1 status must also submit a photocopy of the current I-20 or DS-2019 and I-94 card.

• Students who are non-native speakers of English are required to provide proof of English language proficiency by taking the TOEFL, IELTS, or MET. Scores should be submitted directly from the testing agency to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Please include a photocopy of your score report or the date on which you plan to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or MET.

The deadline to complete the Non-degree Application is one month in advance of the first day of classes (see below). Applications submitted after this time period are not guaranteed to be reviewed prior to the beginning of the semester. The Verification of Student Record must be completed by a secondary school official. Transcripts showing final grades for the last term completed and other documentation should be sent directly by the issuing institution to transcripts@umich.edu, but can be turned in to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by you if contained in an envelope sealed by the issuing institution.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will determine admissibility as applications are received and will notify the applicant of a decision by email. Students are typically notified of their decision in late August (fall term) or late December (winter term) once space and availability is determined and the application and required documentation are received.

Applicants who are F-1 or J-1 visa holders must submit a completed Financial Resources Statement and supporting documentation. Students already in the U.S. on F-1 or J-1 status must also submit a copy of the current I-20 or DS-2019 and I-94 card.

Students who are non-native speakers of English are required to provide proof of English language proficiency by taking the TOEFL, IELTS, or MET . Scores should be submitted directly from the testing agency to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Please include a copy of your score report or the date on which you plan to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or MET.

Registration

Dual enrollment students may not register before the first day of classes. University of Michigan students register for classes online. For information about the registration process, see the Office of the Registrar’s website. Admitted dual enrollment candidates may ONLY enroll in the specific College of Literature, Science, and the Arts coursework stated in the admissions decision letter, provided spaces are available.
Students who wish to continue their dual enrollment status should submit a request for continued enrollment that includes the proposed course title and number for the subsequent term of enrollment. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will notify the student if a new application or additional information is needed. The request should be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at least one month in advance of the first day of classes (see below). Continuation for subsequent terms is contingent upon successful performance in courses.

Registration

LSA non-degree students may not register before the first day of classes except for exchange students who are advised by the school/college to which they applied regarding registration timing. University of Michigan students register for classes online. For information about the registration process, see the Office of the Registrar’s website. Admitted applicants may enroll in whichever courses in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts they are qualified to take, provided spaces are available.
Continuation for subsequent terms is contingent upon successful performance in courses. Students who wish to continue their non-degree status need not file another application if they register within 12 months from the last completed term.
At a later time, if you change from non-degree to degree-seeking status and are admitted and enroll as a transfer student, all credits and grades for courses you completed as a non-degree student will be added to your U-M academic record.

Financial Aid & Housing

Non-degree applicants should be aware that financial aid eligibility is restricted to guaranteed loans. Housing in university facilities is limited and priority is given to degree-seeking students. Eligibility

Before completing the Non-Degree Application, carefully read the information provided below to determine if you are eligible for dual enrollment admission.

To be admitted as a dual enrollment student, you must meet all of the following criteria:

You are a high school student and have:

1. Completed a track of typical college prep courses through the Advanced Placement level.

2. Scored a 4 or 5 on the AP exam to place you in an intermediate level course in the area you are

interested in pursuing dual enrollment (e.g., Calculus III or an intermediate level world language).

Dual enrollment is most commonly approved for math or world language (if not oversubscribed).

There may be some limited opportunity for additional courses for dual enrollment within LSA on a case-by-case basis each year depending on course availability. This includes, but is not limited to: computer science, political science, natural sciences, psychology, economics, and statistics.

Eligibility

Before completing the Non-degree Application, carefully read the information provided below to determine if you are eligible for non-degree admission.

To be admitted as a non-degree student, you must meet at least one of the following criteria:

1. You have completed an undergraduate degree and wish to take courses for purposes other than seeking another undergraduate degree.

2. You have been enrolled in another institution for two to three semesters, are eligible to return to that institution, and have allowed at least one full term (not including spring/summer) to elapse before term of enrollment as a non-degree seeking student. Please note your circumstances clearly in this application and provide supporting documentation from your academic advisor that the above is the case and that permission is granted for you to take a course in LSA and transfer it back to meet your graduation requirements.

3. You are currently at the upper-division level, in good standing and eligible to return to your home institution, and wish to take a course in LSA that is essential to your program of study that is not offered at your home institution. Please note your circumstances clearly in this application and provide supporting documentation from your academic advisor that the above is the case and that permission is granted for you to take a course in LSA and transfer it back to meet your graduation requirements.

4. You have attained the upper-division level at a private college, are in good standing and eligible to return to your home institution, and have permission from your academic advisor to spend a semester or two in LSA to experience part of your college education at a large public institution. Please note your circumstances clearly in this application and provide a letter of support from your academic advisor that the above is the case and that permission is granted for you to enroll in LSA and transfer the credit back to your home institution.

5. You are participating in a special program (such as study abroad) and have official approval marked on the application or have an official written form from a program advisor. Such admissions will usually be for one term and only for the courses offered through that particular program.

Required Documentation:

• Official copy of your high school transcript through completion of your current term of enrollment.

• SAT/ACT scores sent directly by the testing agency to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Note: Exceptions can be made to the SAT/ACT requirement. However, AP results and exhaustion of curriculum will be needed for consideration.

• Copies of AP scores for each subject of interest.

• Completed Non-degree Application, including applicant signature.

• Completed Dual Enrollment Parental Permission Form.

• Completed Verification of Student Record by a high school official certifying that you are eligible.

We highly recommend submission of your application and all available documents before your high school is dismissed for the summer. High school students may not enroll as dual enrollment students for college courses simply because the courses are not offered in their high school (e.g., any first- or second-year language courses).

The following documentation must be provided with all Non-degree Applications:

Have the Verification of Student Record** completed certifying that you have received a degree (Graduates of all schools/colleges at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor campus do not need to have the Verification of Student Record certified by the U-M Office of the Registrar. Certification of the student’s record will be completed by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions),

3. Bring your diploma to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, where we will make a copy for our records.

Note: You may be required to submit a high school transcript if you will have earned less than 25 credits by the term of your non-degree enrollment.

Non-degree admission will not normally be granted for the following types of students:

1. Students whose purpose is to obtain a University of Michigan undergraduate degree.

2. Students who have missed a deadline for degree application or students whose degree application was incomplete by the deadline.

3. Students who have been denied admission as a degree-seeking student because of weak academic preparation.

4. Students who have previously enrolled as degree-seeking students at U-M, but have not completed a degree at U-M or any other institution. Such students should complete a Readmit Application or a Cross-campus Transfer Application.
